Where I come from, eliciting this kind of response from Google (or any large company) is cause for a few high-fives in the office.
Given that CNet and Google compete for the same ad dollar, I wonder whether Google’s hoping the decision will have a financial impact since negotiated scoops will be hard/impossible to get and CNet’s traffic will suffer.

I’d love to know where this wondering is going. Google a competitor? No Mark, the company YOU work for are a competitor to CNET and it is something you should disclose IMHO.

Brendon (and thanks for using your name), I’ve disclosed the fact I work for the AFR a number of times. However, your post made me realise that I’ve not updated my “About” page – I’ll fix that.
I disagree. All media companies compete with Google, Yahoo, MSN etc for marketing funds. That’s one of the biggest changes going on in the media business right now. So, yes we compete with both Google and CNET. CNET is arguably more directly in the firing line in this case than print media because we also generate revenues from readers via paper sales.
